Geoff Durbin displayed  flawless technique and a searing intensity  - Mark Carlson

Dr. Geoffrey Durbin is an XO Brass and Jupiter Trombone and Euphonium Performing Artist, currently a member of Presidio Brass, based in San Diego, CA and Visiting Assistant Professor of Low Brass and Musciology at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, AR.

 

Dr. Durbin's virtuosity, musicianship, and versatility has allowed him to enjoy an active livelihood, in demand as a soloist, educator, clinician, and freelance musician, performing all over the United States and abroad, including his most recent guest artist residencies at the International Euphonium and Tuba Institute at Emory University and the Institución Universitaria Bellas Artes y Ciencias de Bolívar in Cartagena, Colombia as well as various conferences held by the International Tuba and Euphonium Association.

His playing has thrilled audiences through his work as a soloist, such as his performance of Luc Vertommen's "Carmen Fantasy" with the Louisiana State University Wind Ensemble, John Stevens' "Euphonium Concerto" with the University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra, and his performance of Simone Mantia's "Fantasie Originale" with the Eastern Iowa Brass Band.  His teaching and playing have been welcomed as part of summer workshops including the Messiah College Conductor’s Symposium, the North Texas Conductor’s Collegium, the North Texas Opera Workshop, and the Memphis Music Camp and Advanced Trombone Workshop.  Additionally, he has been an active recording musician and his playing can be heard on more than twenty albums. 

As an educator, Dr. Durbin has instructed students of all ages and  have enjoyed much success.  His high school students have secured positions in the All-State Festivals in every state in which he has resided: Arkansas All-State Band, Arkansas All-State Jazz, Tennessee All-State Band, Tennessee All-State Orchestra, Texas All-State Band, Pennsylvania All-State Band.  Additionally his students have occupied the Arkansas Intercollegiate Band, Memphis Youth Symphony, Lone Star Youth Wind Orchestra, and various drum and bugle corps, been accepted to festivals and competitions such as the Leonard Falcone Euphonium Competition (Student division) and the United States Marine Band Concerto Competition as well as earning high honors at various UIL solo and ensemble festivals.

As a competitor, he has been accepted to a number of solo competitions, including the prestigious Leonard Falcone Euphonium Competition at which he won the first-place gold medal in 2013, the silver medal in 2010.  He has also been selected as a semi-finalist in the International Tuba and Euphonium Association Euphonium Competition. In 2013, he won the First Prize at the South Central Regional Tuba and Euphonium Competition in the Euphonium Artist division. 

He has studied with Dr. Brian Bowman, Dr. Gary Bird, Dr. John Mueller, Dr. Jeff Baker, Dr. Kyle Mullins, and Grant Moore III and has earned degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (Bachelor of Science in Music Education), the University of North Texas (Master in Music: Performance), and the University of Memphis (Doctor of Musical Arts: Performance).

Dr. Durbin currently resides in Benton, AR (south of Little Rock) with his wife Catherine and son Peter.
